Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum
I’ve had a bit of a love/hate relationship with the Guggenheim since I moved to the NYC area. It definitely is one of the Big Apple’s architectural wonders and worth a visit for the building alone. And their permanent collection is of the quality you’d expect from a big-name, big-money museum on 5th Avenue. But their changing exhibitions have always been a maddening mishmash of dazzling brilliance and god-awful dreck. There is one long term exhibit coming up in 2019 however that is setting LGBT (and many other I’m sure) hearts all a-flutter. Provocateur Robert Mapplethorpe’s controversial photographs, which often felt like ground zero in the 80s culture wars, will be on display most of the year. Adults only please!
