Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge
The Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge has been a symbol of national pride since it was finished in 1968. It's one of the only bridges throughout China to have been designed and constructed soley by Chinese workers. On a more somber note it ranks as one of the highest suicide bridges in the world.
If you can tolerate the onslaught of honking bike horns as riders whip past you, just inches away, coupled with a mouthful of car fumes from the constant flow of traffic; this bridge is worth your time to give reverence to.
The lift (open until 5.30pm) from Bridge Park below bypasses you having to take the lengthy walk (1.5 km approx.) along the abutments on southside to the main bridge. To get up and down costs 15 RMB (at the time of writing). An imposing statue of Chairman Mao raising his right arm perpendicular to his body, greets visitors at the entrance of the ground floor lift and museum. Signs for the lift from the park are scantily placed and location of the lift is rather inconspicuous.
Armed guards stand at both ends of the bridge in glass-walled rooms in a regimented fashion, around the clock.
The view from the bridge is quite impressive.
Directions: You can take Bus No. 1, 67 or 69 which is an easy number to recall considering its construction in '68. There are no metro stations nearby so if riding the buses seem too daunting an affair; hail a taxi and ask them to drop you off at Bridge Park (桥公园).
