A lot can be said for the Kiev Pechersk Lavra (Caves Monastery) of Kïev and is the one sight in the city not to be missed. Whether your sphere of interest is history, photography or religion this place ticks every box. It appears on most visitors radar due to its 1000 year history and still operates as a working monastery almost around the clock. Historically it's rated as one of the key centres of Eastern Orthodox Christianity as well as being a UNESCO world heritage site since 1990. What adds to this holiest of city sites are the 100 monks buried below street level reached through chambers and navigated by candles availed at the shop at ground level. There are a number of entrances into the catacombs as there is more than one.
