This spacious, visitor friendly museum is one of the city’s best. It’s comprehensive but not exhausting with thoughtful and well designed displays. Like all good Byzantine museums, you’ll be blown away by the gorgeous mosaics. But the pottery, sophisticated glassware, moving religious works and illustrated manuscripts will also keep any history/art buff well-engaged. Make sure to visit the burial vaults with their poignant, faded paintings and the utterly magnificent Ekonomopoulos collection of loving preserved icons.
