135 Street Walk of Fame
Harlem a place of such rich history and many of its most famous residents, including the brilliant writer James Baldwin, are honored with plaques laid out on the north side of 135th street, east of Frederick Douglass Boulevard. One of the numerous walking tours of the area will probably take you past these and is absolutely worth doing for an in-depth look into America’s most famous African-American neighborhood. Besides the Baldwin plaque, visitors with a special interest in LGBT history may get to see the former homes of Langston Hughes and Lorraine Hansberry and may also hear about how Harlem also was the original sight of “drag balls” which openly drew thousands of participants and spectators in the 1920s and 30s.
