Yue Lao is a legendary deity rooted to the Chinese folk and Taoist belief system. The name translates as 'Old man under the moon' and has associations to love, destiny and romantic symbolism. Though the oversized statue of the god looks plastic and thousands of red love ribbons seem rather kitsch; the shrine still carries deep meaning. All the same, it merits the same respect accorded to any faith practice. I shuffled into the temple with a little curiosity to find a steady flow of devotees kneeling, praying and giving reverence to this small spiritual enclave of Wuzhen.
