Striezelmarkt
Striezelmarket is reputedly the oldest living Christmas market in the world, dating back to 1434. It originally lasted only one day annually and over time had gained popularity. Every year there is a display of one of the world's largest Stollen cakes, measuring over four metres. The event attracts thousands of visitors from beyond the European continent.
Local commuter trains from The Czech Republic leave many passengers standing. Markets here draw in millions of visitors annually in a showdown of lights, liquor and whole lot of ornamental lace. Striezelmarket is no exception. The food and drink stalls are centred around Bratwurst (German sausage) but there's plenty more. Mini bars work rum and Amaretto into hot chocolate drinks and food outlets selling empanadas are not uncommon.
Don't forget to look up in order to spot a Christmas tree perched on a tower crane!
