Rotunda
This stout, solid structure looks big from the outside but you only really get a sense of its size when you walk through the doors. Originally built as as a mausoleum for a Roman emperor, it was never used for that purpose and the Rotunda instead became Thessaloniki’s first church. You may need to use your imagination a bit to get a sense of the grandeur of the ancient mosaics which soar overhead, but a short film playing on the ground floor will give you a better view of these splendid works of art.
