Rioni
Balconies suspend from rock ledges and hang over the rushing waters of the wild Rioni River through Kutaisi. The river is closely linked to the Colchis Kingdom and is also tied to Greek and Persian conquests. It not only defines their border but played an important part in agriculture and trade. My time here was brief but felt an extra day would have been favourable. Its laid back edge leaves visitors with the impression it's much smaller than the third most populous city in Georgia. Unlike myself, most travellers filter straight from the airport out of town and make for the coast or journey north to the mountainous regions.
