Asura Mahishasura, after whom the city was named, is located at the entrance of the temple. He is called the buffalo demon, whose name is well known for evil in different forms. The battle between Mahishasura and Goddess Durga, whereby the demon gets killed has been narrated in various texts in Hinduism. As per the legend story, he waged war between Asura and Deva, who then gained the boon that no man can kill him. Lord Indra gets defeated and all Deva's reach Goddess Durga, who takes Lion form and kills Mahishasura.
