The Great Mosque of Touba
One of the splendours of Central Senegal in a region named after the city of Touba is The Great Mosque of Touba. It's the largest of its kind in West Africa, evident from its towering minarets, mausoleums dotted around its perimeter and double front facing courtyards. Locals in and out have a constant busyiness in their step but adopt a polite stance when engaged. The city is merged with the small town of Mbacke. It is known by all as the place to do all the things one shouldn't when entering the religious heart of Senegal. There are few hotels anywhere and is not a place geared towards tourism. As a result coming here makes a visit here not only a little confusing but rewarding and most memorable. The mosque can be reached by travelling down a 7 kilometre road connecting neighbouring Mbacke with Touba's heart. I flagged down a moped and made haste to the mosque before dusk. The vibrance of the city melted away behind my wind swept hair in the fading evening Senegalese sun as the lights of The Grand Mosque of Touba became ever more patent. #photography #views #architecture
