Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi
The semi-underground mosques and domes of Turkistan whisk you back half a millennia in a 24-hour train journey north of Almaty. Locals are more than benevolent, curious and eager to interact with those bold enough to venture into a place land locked by time and space. The structure was built as a tribute to a Muslim Scholar Khoja Ahmed Yasawi in the 14th Century under the rule of Tamberlane. Due to his sudden death construction was halted and as a result wooden scaffolding can still be seen protruding from the exterior of this mausoleum. #mausoleum #photography #history #architecture
