Schloss Eggenberg
This grandiose palace can only be visited on a guided tour, available in both English and German on the hour. The extravagant rooms are exactly what you would expect from wealthy Austrian royalty, over-the top opulence. You’ll be straining your neck admiring the glorious ceiling frescos while your erudite tour guide explains the hidden symbolism and stories in each one. After your walk through the Schloss, head toward the various museums located on the grounds. In particular, the Alte Galerie houses an unmissable assemblage of medieval paintings and sculptures, including works by Cranach and Brueghel the Younger, and is undoubtably the best of the bunch.
