Poppies Fish & Chips, Spitalfields
Food at Poppies is tasty and an ideal place to experience Fish n' Chips in London. If you haven't the luxury of sampling them at a seaside town in England, Poppies won't disappoint. The premises has existed since 1952 and the owner has had a long-standing relationship with the place since he was 11. The chips were exactly how English chips should be; moist, a little oily with that fluffy texture you get when you bite into one. I opted for the chicken pie which displayed fine properties of flaky pastry, a creamy centre and succulent fillings. There was none of the dryness or stickiness apparent in processed pies and like the menu stated, it was homemade. Poppies lies just outside Old Spitalfields Market at the end of Hanbury Street. It is a five minute walk from Brick Lane and 15 minutes on foot from Liverpool Street Station. Afternoons the restaurant is packed, so arrive before noon if you want a table. Opening times: 11am - 11pm from Monday to Thursday (until 11.30pm on Fridays & Saturdays); 11am - 10.30pm on Sundays.
