Castelo de São Jorge
São Jorge Castle has a long standing history and stands on a hill over the River Tagus. Throughout the centuries it has been the staging post of Celts, Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans; then much later the Moors. The castle was also the venue of a reception between Vacso da Gama and the then King Manuel I at the end of the fifteenth century. when he returned from his voyage around India.
The fortress can be seen a most points around the city and is without doubt one of the key tourist attractions of Lisbon.
