Commonly referred to by outsiders as the Buddhist Rock Temple for ease of speech, Yatagala Raja Maha Viharaya is one of the more distinct temples in this region. Built into a cave, the ornate details and colourful facade make it a notable place to visit on your bucket list through Sri Lanka. Once you've scaled the series of stone steps to the base of a nine metre Buddhist statue, you'll be faced with views over the rice fields. It's hard to imagine places like this have been occupied by monks for literally well over a millennium. Crowds here are non-existent leaving you almost full reign for seeing the temple's alluring features.
