The most famous of British classical artists, the Gainsboroughs, Turners and Constables were pretty darn good. But let’s face it, they elict admiration much more than they arouse passion. We aren’t talking the Italian Renaissance, the old Dutch masters or the French Impressionists here.
But the English have done two things very, very well. They are at heart dedicated collectors and have amassed in their museums, by hook and sometimes by crook, top-notched assemblages of the world’s great art. And of late, the capital city has been out in front of the contemporary arts scene. Also London’s street art is, IMHO, second only to that of New York and it is getting to be a pretty close second..
