You can reconnoitre the French Concession district which is a respite from all that high rise glass and cast iron. Think leafy boulevards, boutique shops and quaint bistros. You're bound to find an abundance of veg options. Try the InterContinental Ruijin if you want s.th lavish, yet without the pomp. They even have a croquet lawn!
