Twickenham Tandoori
Kingfisher larger on tap, hot flannels, after dinner mints are the essential ingredients for a good Indian and The Twickenham Tandoori manages just that. From Thursday to Sunday the street closes to cars and the restaurants spill out on to the narrow one lane street - Spanish style. The decor is a little tired but it has all the charms of what one would expect of Indian restaurants - padded seating, dimmed lighting and linen table cloths set with with cutlery and fancy origami styled serviettes. The sheer fact the place has not changed since perhaps it first opened in the last millennia, for me gave me an authentic experience. I judge a place initially by its comfort value and hardback, wooden chairs in some contemporary style curry houses do not appeal, which clearly this isn't. Meals come after the waiter sets down an oven warmed plate adding to the true flavors of the spices and sizzling Tandoori chicken. But no meal in this establishment is the same without a Peshwari naan bread. Cooked in Ghee and smothered in almond paste, the taste even without mopping up the curry with it makes you want to devour every morsel before mains have arrived.
