Urząd Miasta Szklarska Poręba
The thoroughfare 1 Maja runs between the Kamienna river and foothills of Krkonoše Mountains to the south. The town of just 7,000 inhabitants is geared almost entirely to tourism. Thus, 1 Maja is one of the best places to witness this. Hotels stand side by side souvenir shops and restaurants in almost uniform manner.
In parts, buildings around the centre are half finished. Conversely, there are some impressive villas to marvel at; often serving as restaurants or guesthouses. The main train station at Górna hosts panoramic views of mountains and town below. It sits furtively in clusters of pine trees.
Not only is the place a popular centre for skiing, and hiking, but a well-known destination for gem stones and glass. Shops and museums devote their windows to displays of hewn quartz crystals and amethysts. Other outlets simply hang winter garb on clothes racks out in the street.
Come at any time of the year and you'll be rewarded with satisfying soups and palatable perogie throughout town. It impressed me that in spite of being dedicated to tourism, international food chains were non-existent.
