The ruins of Shkodër fortress were operational until as recent as the first Balkan War in the early 20th century. You can scale the crenellated walls and cast your eyes down over the town of Shkodër itself. Entrance is free if you head up early as there is no-one manning the no-frills ticket desk. Since my visit, things might have changed a little---but then again, maybe not! #photography #views #history
