Alcatraz
Alcatraz Island would be little more than a drop in the ocean if it waded out to sea. Its position in San Francisco Bay however has a strong presence, especially as far as landmarks go. Over time the island has functioned as a military garrison, prison and venue for protests among the Native Americans in the 1970's. This was all before it opened up to the public. You can wade past it on the ferry as I did or spend time to absorb life in one of the most notorious prisons in history. Costs vary from $23 for a child between 5-11 years to $90.50 for an adult - behind the scenes tour. The price of the ticket includes the 15 minute ferry service to the island from Pier 33 and returns approximately every 20 minutes. Opening hours: 8.45am - 6.30pm (approx.)
