Radcliffe Camera
Named after a wealthy doctor called John Radcliffe, The Radcliffe Camera was completed a couple of decades after his death as a purpose built library in 1737. He gained his wealth from royal patients William III and Queen Anne, leaving £40,000 for its construction. The term Camera is derived from Latin meaning 'room' and from outside gives you that very impression of a structure housing just one room. The library is positioned in a perfectly mown lawn, set in the heart of Oxford. It's a breeze to circumnavigate the library and a challenge to get a shot of the building without passersby wishing to do the very same. As a result I chose to make a snap shot of it from Tom's Tower at the end of High Street. #photography #history #architecture #free
