Quarry Great America
Translated as The Quarry of Great America, this is Czech's answer to the Grand Canyon. Less than a quarter of a kilometer to its east is Quarry Mexico constructed by German prisoners of war after World War 2 as a punishment by communist ruled Czechoslovakia. Whilst I didn't have time to view its beauty from the bottom, overlooking them both is a sight to behold and completely free. There are well marked trails around both quarries with wire barriers discouraging walkers from falling to their death 100 metres below. The larger of the two affords some sublime swimming in the summer as well as boating, kayaking and bathing. Mexico Quarry is somewhat wild resembling a small swamp with trees and bushes growing out of the water below. I loved glancing down at the azure blue water of Great America whilst exchanging pleasantries to happy hikers coming from different sides. Hiking around the 800 metre long larger quarry takes no time. Thus it can be added on to a morning hike from the pretty nearby village of Mořina of just 900 inhabitants. #quarry #photography #hiking #swimming #activekids #familyfriendly
