Rheenendal has many hidden natural gems, including the 9km hiking trails, Circles in the Forest. The hiking route traverses through luscious green indigenous mountain forest with tall 800 + years old Outeniqua Yellowwoods, jurassic tree ferns and hidden black pools with waterfalls. The hike is named after the Novel, Circles in the Forest, by the late South African author, Daleen Matthee. The story takes you deep into the impenetrable forest where the illusive Knysna forest elephant still roams. This adds an extra dimension to the hike, knowing that the ghosts of the characters in the book lingers in the forest and that there is a slight chance you might encounter one of the last remaining Knysna elephants.
