San Francisco is an arty, hedonistic place filled with vitality and street life of varying degrees. People easily forget that it's on a peninsula sandwiched between the Gulf of Farallones and San Francisco Bay. As a rest it it receives a temperate climate compared to sticky LA and a gentle breeze most days. For an American city its amazing how much life there is on the street from buskers to gatherings in parks. Perhaps the weather lends itself well to its strong outdoor culture.
