You can rent 4WD vehicles and go on self guided (or guided) desert safaris! Coyotes, eagles, big horn sheep, and friggin road runners (meep meep!)

Also the sky tram right outside Palm Springs! You can take a cable car up a mountain and be in a completely different forested mountain cool environment from the desert in minutes. And kids love the cable car. I loved it when I was a kid
