Crete is the largest island of Greece and very popular for its' ancient ruins of the minoan culture which dates back 4000 years ago. Whilst some areas, especially beaches, are often crowded with tourists during summer, there are also many places which are easily overlooked, but more authentic and interesting than the main tourist attractions. Crete can easily be explored by car, the roads sometimes lead to the most beautiful view points when you never expect it. The people living here are very kind, open and friendly and are always ready to help out or to chat about their daily life, their culture and whatever you might want to know. Even though Greek is the main language, even in the inner, more rural part of the isalnd, people will still be able to communicate in English pretty well.
