It's easy to overlook the fact that Portsmouth is situated on an island. Furthermore, as the most densely populated city in the UK it certainly doesn't feel nearly as congested as parts of London or Oxford. The historical sights and swathes of open space on the pebble beach of the island of Portsea, make the whole island a pleasure playground for history buff's, beachbums and adventure seekers. The charming vessels, cosy cafes and impressive views across The Solent make even a day here quite compelling.
